The rose engine, and why the machine is the secret

A guilloche cannot be drawn. It can only be generated — which is precisely the point.

The rose engine is a lathe with an eccentric. A cutting tool is held at a fixed radius while a small wheel rolls inside or outside a larger fixed circle, and the tool traces a trochoid. Repeat the same trochoid a few hundred times, each rotated by a small constant angle, and the superposition produces the dense banded figure that has decorated certificates for two hundred years.

The important word is superposition. No individual curve looks like much. The pattern is an interference effect between the repeats, and it is governed entirely by the ratios the machine is set to — the radius of the fixed circle, the radius of the rolling wheel, the offset of the tool.

Sensitivity

Those ratios are unforgiving. Move the tool offset by a fraction and the figure reorganises into something visibly different. That sensitivity is what makes the pattern a security feature rather than an ornament: to reproduce it you must recover the settings, not the picture, and the picture does not tell you the settings.

It also means a guilloche is genuinely a signature. Two houses setting out to produce “a rosette” will produce two figures that an examiner can tell apart at a glance.
